A2P 10DLC is a messaging system in the United States that enables businesses to send Application-to-Person (A2P) messages using standard 10-digit long code (10DLC) phone numbers. U.S. carriers classify all messaging traffic sent through telecommunication carriers and and messaging platforms as A2P. Compared to traditional long code SMS, A2P 10DLC offers improved message delivery and reduced filtering risk—while still using familiar 10-digit phone numbers.
Application-to-Person (A2P) messaging refers to any message sent from a software application to a person, rather than from one individual to another. These messages are typically one-way and not intended to receive a reply. Examples of A2P messaging include marketing campaigns, appointment reminders, chatbot interactions, notifications, and one-time passwords (OTPs) or PIN codes.
In the US and Canada, carriers enforce a strict definition of A2P messaging. They classify all messages sent via telecommunication carriers—or any other messaging service provider—as A2P traffic.

Yes, if you’re sending SMS or MMS to U.S. phone numbers using long code numbers, you are required to register for A2P 10DLC.
A2P 10DLC registration involves several steps, including creating a Business Profile, registering a U.S. A2P Brand, and selecting a Campaign use case.
Brand registration is typically quick—often completed within days if all required information is available. For U.S.-based businesses, this includes having your Employer Identification Number (EIN) on hand. However, if there are discrepancies in the submitted information, the process may require Secondary Vetting, which can take up to 7-10 days. To help prevent delays, we have an A2P 10DLC Brand Approval Best Practices.
All A2P Campaign registrations undergo a vetting process. Standard use cases usually take 1–7 business days for approval. Be sure to account for this timeframe, and for more details, check out our A2P 10DLC Campaign Vetting FAQ.
The approval process begins with primary vetting of your brand by The Campaign Registry. Twilio also automatically submits your brand for Secondary Vetting, an additional review that can boost your messaging throughput and limits. Once both reviews are complete, you’ll receive a Trust Score, which determines your long code messaging capacity to U.S. carriers—along with daily message limits to T-Mobile, as outlined in our guide on Message Throughput (MPS) and Trust Scores for A2P 10DLC in the U.S.
To ensure your Brand gets approved and earns the highest possible Trust Score, it's important to submit your business information accurately and completely. Below are some best practices to help guide you through the process, along with answers to common questions about Brand registration.
For private and public for-profit businesses in the U.S., the Employer Identification Number (EIN) and Legal Company Name must match official business registration records.
For non-profits and political organizations, the EIN must match the Legal Company Name listed in the official directories of Tax-Exempt Organizations or Registered Political Organizations.

When registering a U.S. entity, be sure to enter your Legal Company Name exactly as it appears on the IRS-issued CP 575 EIN Confirmation Letter. An exact match between the Legal Name and EIN—based on the CP 575—is required for successful Brand registration.
Avoid using the Legal Name from W-2 or W-9 forms, as these may differ from what's listed on the CP 575 notice.
If you don’t have access to your CP 575, reach out to your company’s accountant or finance department. If the notice has been lost, you can request a 147C letter from the IRS and use the information provided there for registration.
Check your CP 575 or 147C forms for your EIN.
If you don’t have access, contact your company’s accountant or finance department to request it.
For private and public for-profit companies outside the U.S., the Tax ID and Legal Company Name must match official business registration records.
All customers creating a Business Profile must provide a valid Tax ID.
For Standard A2P 10DLC Brand registration or companies with an international presence, a local Tax ID is required.
Businesses based outside the U.S. or Canada may be subject to additional vetting to verify their brand.
In such cases, registration as a Low Volume Standard Brand will not be available.
As of July 27, 2024, only Business Numbers (BN) are accepted for Canadian Brand registration. We no longer accept Corporation, Incorporation, or Registry ID numbers.
Only the first 9 numeric digits of the BN (BN-9) should be submitted.
Example: If your BN is 123456789RT0001, only submit 123456789.
Always ensure your Legal Company Name and address exactly match your business registration records and are correctly spelled.
Avoid these frequent mistakes when entering your EIN or Tax ID during registration:
Using an incorrect business name – Do not use the name of your messaging provider, a DBA (Doing Business As), or a trade name. You must enter your official, legally registered name exactly as it appears in IRS records (for U.S. companies) or the equivalent authority in your country. No abbreviations or variations should be used.
Entering an invalid number – Ensure the number entered in the EIN or Tax ID field is a valid identifier issued by your country’s tax authority.
Submitting a DUNS number instead of an EIN – U.S.-based companies must provide an EIN, not a DUNS number.
Using a Social Security Number (SSN) – If you file taxes using an SSN, you should register your brand as a sole proprietor,
To avoid a lower Trust Score, make sure your business address matches exactly with your official registration records. Mismatches in any of the following fields can negatively impact your score:
Street Address
City
State/Province
Postal Code/ZIP Code
Country
Important: Do not use the address of a local branch or office. Only submit your official registered company address to ensure proper verification and avoid potential mismatches.
